Jose Antonio Guerra is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Health and Management at the Atlantic Veterinary College, University of Prince Edward Island, Canada, specializing in large animal surgery with a focus on soft tissue and orthopedic surgery.
Dr. Guerra earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree (Honors) from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) in 2011, followed by a Master of Science degree (Honors) from UNAM in 2015. In 2023, he completed another Master of Science degree at the University of Saskatchewan, Canada.
During his time at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine, he participated in several research studies with Dr. Joe Bracamnte and Dr. Keri Thomas, including the project presented in this AAEP 2024 convention. His dedication to research has been recognized with four years of tuition awards from the Townsend Equine Health Research Fund, and in 2022, he received an award from the Equine Foundation of Canada for his demonstrated interest and scientific merit in equine research.
Dr. Guerra's clinical training includes a Rotating Equine Internship at the FMVZ-UNAM Equine Hospital, Mexico city (2015-2017), a Rotating Large Animal Internship at the Ontario Veterinary College, University of Guelph, Canada (2018-2019), and a Large Animal Surgery Residency at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Saskatchewan, Canada (2019-2023).
He also holds certification as a General Equine Practitioner from the National Veterinary Certification Council (CONCERVET) in Mexico, obtained in 2017.
